Anti road protest in the Netherlands

topic posted Sat, July 22, 2006 - 3:41 AM by  offlineHarmen

Through the environmental movement i have been involved in many actions to stop the building new roads and/or expansion of airports.

The latest protest involves expansion plans of the highway near Amsterdam, the so called
A6 – A9 right through a beautiful area.

Here are some links, they are in dutch but the pictures tell more than a thousand words.

Is there also an anti road protest in your area? I am interested (language does not matter).

The Washington DC/Virginia/Maryland metro area has a movement opposing the construction of the intercounty connector, or ICC. Some info here:

                    Good news:

                    On the dutch National news:

                    www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/...er_nieuw.html

                    Road Naarden Lake (A6/A9) canceled,

The new highway beside the Naarden Lake has been canceled. After the PvdA (socialist) now also the VVD (conservative Liberals) is against the road beside the natural area, that must end the traffic jam between Amsterdam and Almere. The VVD now wants a bridge between Amsterdam North and Almere.

The VVD a long time promoter of the highway says they have listened to criticism to the A6-A9 scenario. In the past months a lot of environmental organizations, local communities, local government and dutch celebrities protested the assault on the “Naarden” lake.

Adjustments to protect nature, like a 8 kilometer long tunnel, might cost € 4 billion. Also the VVD finds that to expensive.

“Live has it ways” member of dutch parliament Hofstra explains the change of opinion from the VVD. “Despite adjustments protest remained, also from our supporters. You have to listen to that. It is the oldest protected natural area in the Netherlands.”

Next to the PvdA also D66 (liberals), Groen Links (Green party) and the Socialist party have stated to be against the highway that connects highway A6 near Muiderberg with Highway A9 near Holendrecht. “I think that the chance is zero that the Highway will be really built” says Hofstra. The government has postponed the decision, because all kinds of alternatives have to be recalculated.

One of the most important alternatives is the widening and deepening of the “Gaasperdammer” road south east from Amsterdam. The A1 highway would then be widened with 12 lanes and the A9 highway with 9 lanes. Disadvantage is that the highway crosses a living area where 25.000 humans live.
The widening of the road would also cost € 4 billion. Hofstra: “You should also not do that, you would have to pay that much money for a road crossing a city neighborhood.”

The VVD now wants the € 4 billion to be used for the so called “ÏJ Lake connection”. A bridge that would connect Amsterdam with Almere, the city that with a planned construction of at least 45.000 homes until 2020 will grow out to be the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. Hofstra says the plan “has a large chance to succeed”, because the bridge is meant for cars as well as public transport.

“I am thinking about the Golden Gate Bridge”, says Hofstra referencing one of the longest bridges in the world in San Fransisco. “On one floor trains and on the other floor cars”. The VVD thinks that a renowned architect should design the bridge”.

The VVD hopes that the majority of parliament will back the plan, so that the next government can take a decision fast. “Because off course something got to happen fast”. The PvdA reacts positive. The CDA (Conservative Christian Democrats) thinks it is to early to make a choice, because not all alternatives have been studied.

                      We NEED less cars.

                      NOT more mega projects.

I have translated the following article from a moderate dutch national newspaper.

                        www.nrc.nl/binnenland/article478432.ece

                        Tunnel plan “Naarden Lake” Canceled.

There will be probably no tunnel besides the “Naarden” Lake. The VVD (conservative Liberals), like the left wing opposition, rejects construction of the highway that connects the A6 highway near Muiderberg and the A9 Highway near Holendrecht. A parliamentary majority for the construction of a tunnel seems to have disappeared.

The VVD wants the approximately 4 billion Euro that the government has reserved for traffic in the region between Schiphol, Amsterdam and Almere, assigned for widening of highways mostly the A1 highway to Amsterdam, and for the construction of a IJ Lake connection for train and car over the water between Amsterdam and Almere:

“In that case we something for public transport and for the regional car traffic” says member of Parliament Pieter Hofstra (VVD).

The VVD not only rejects the new highway besides the Naarden Lake, but also the alternative where existing roads in the area will be widened and partly roofed, like the “Gaasperdammer” road near Amsterdam South East. This last variant has the support of the city of Amsterdam.

Hofstra: “There is a lot of opposition against the construction of a tunnel from humans that say it will threaten nature. We save that nature now. It is also not very useful to spend a lot of money putting the “Gaasperdammer” road under the ground. In both scenarios nothing is done for public transport. We would rather invest in a new IJ lake connection. There will be an second axis for rail travel in the region, and a regional road with two times three lanes will cover a lot traffic from the surrounding highways. Traffic jams will decrease.”

PvdA (socialist) member of parliament Co Verdaas called the changed position of the VVD
“a break-through”. Verdaas tells that the plans of the VVD connect to the opinion of the PvdA, even though he is not yet sure if a IJ Lake connection is sufficient to reduce traffic jams in other places.

The CDA (Conservative Christian Democrats) finds that parliament first has to await the decision by the government.

Member of parliament Eddy van Hijum: “It is risky to make a political game out of a billion Euro project like this. The parliament must not identify with one of the alternatives prematurely. Lets wait until the government after solid investigation has made a decision”. Van Hijum also does not know of a IJ lake connection sufficiently counters traffic jams. “I strongly doubt that”.

The government has not yet reached an agreement about a decision.

                        note from the translator:

                        1 € = 1.27 $

So that is a lot of money.
