Thu, February 19, 2009 - 5:20 PMI live in Portland, OR where Toyota has a unloading facility near my house, as do Hyundai and Honda. Their local lots are packed too. I heard today that last year something like 830 dealerships in the US folded last year too.
I expect there are even more lots around the world in similar straits. While its easy to smirk, ( and yes, I am smirking..but only a little.) remember that these lots represent family wage jobs for many many people. When those cars don't sell, they start seeing pink slips.
I hope that some of that manufacturing capacity is retooled to build more relevant products,and those workers are given new opportunity. Until that happens, this will be that slow death spiral.
And it will be painfully slow.
